Course Description

Course Description: In this 6 week course, students will learn various sculpting techniques to create functional ceramic sculptures. Functional ceramic sculpture is an art form that combines visual beauty with everyday use, transforming ordinary ceramic objects into expressive, artistic pieces. These works, such as vessels, or decorative home objects, serve practical purposes like holding, or containing, while also acting as unique focal points within a space. By blending craftsmanship, design, and creativity, functional ceramic sculpture brings together utility and artistic expression in a meaningful and engaging way, using different techniques such as pinch pot, coiling and slab making. Course Details: 🗓️ Start Date: May 25 - June 29 2025. Monday evenings, once a week, for 2.5 hours, over 6 weeks ⏰ Time: 6:30 PM – 8:30 PM 📍 Location: Beyond Pottery, Burlington, ON 👩‍🏫 Instructor: Shahrzad Amin 👥 Suitable for: This course is intended for adults and teens 16+. Beginners are welcome as well as those who want to build on previous clay building skills. 🎨 Includes: Clay, tools, glazes, and kiln firings What You’ll Learn: How to create vessels inspired by natural forms like trees, coral, seed pods, fungi, etc. Please bring your inspiration! Additionally, you will learn to make a sculpture of an animal or object from nature. Last, you will learn about different glazing and surface decorating techniques to add color and finish your pieces. Pro Tips for Success: ✨ Avoid wearing jewelry or having long nails—they can get in the way ✨ Bring an apron or an old t-shirt and a towel Pick-Up Information: You can collect finished works during sessions or after the course ends.
